association with fluid overload, kidney failure
BNP and NT-proBNP are hormones secreted by cells in ventricles of the heart, in response to stretching of the ventricles.
Elevated levels of BNP and NT-proBNP are used primarily as measures of congestive heart failure (build up of fluid in the lungs due to poor heart functioning).
BNP blocks the release of antidiuretic hormone, thereby encouraging water and sodium loss through the kidneys, to reduce fluid volume.
The articles referenced below will discuss the overlap of BNP measurements in kidney disease and heart failure.
