What is Home Hemodialysis and Why is Home Dialysis Right for Some Patients?
Home dialysis usually refers to a hemodialysis technique that uses a home hemodialysis machine to dialyze the blood of patients with chronic kidney failure. Home hemodialysis is usually performed by patients every day, but for a shorter period of time than in-center dialysis treatments.
Some studies suggest that by dialyzing every day, patients may have better overall outcomes than less frequent in-center dialysis. Patients who are considering home hemodialysis need to be capable of managing their medications and treatment protocols at home.
Peritoneal dialysis is another form of home dialysis treatment, but in this case the dialysate (bags of filtering solution) are instilled and drained through a catheter that is placed in the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal dialysis is usually performed at home and at night, and requires the help of a family member or friend.
Hemodialysis.com will present articles and research publications that addess home dialysis below:

Patient shares how at-home hemodialysis fits his lifestyle
Dialyzing at home has several advantages for dialysis patients, including providing independence and an ability to dialyze when it is convenient (within prescription guidelines), as well as instilling confidence in their ability to perform self-care at home. Like many patients who have switched to home treatments, Chuck Letner wasn’t a stranger to dialysis treatment, in fact; he has nearly 30 years of experience.
Letner was diagnosed with renal dysplasia when he was six years old and he began dialysis treatments in 1979 after his body rejected the second of two donor kidneys. After approximately 12 years of visiting in-center facilities – with four years off dialysis in the middle of those years following a kidney transplant – Letner decided to make the switch to at-home hemodialysis treatment and has never looked back. |

WASHINGTON, March 29, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Today, more than fifty invited leaders in the field of kidney dialysis - including patients, clinicians, industry, and policymakers - assembled in Washington, D.C. for the first-ever National Summit on Home Dialysis Policy. The group came together to identify common concerns and opportunities to drive appropriate utilization of home dialysis and identify pathways for collaborative action. Home dialysis, including peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, are alternatives to in-center treatment, which requires patients to visit a clinic or hospital three to four times per week. |

New York, NY--While 398,000 patients in the U.S. receive dialysis treatment for kidney failure, only ten percent dialyze at home. A recent report in the National Kidney Foundation’s American Journal of Kidney Diseases suggested that as a result of systematic barriers, patients are not alwaysreceiving the option of home dialysis, despite the therapy’s advantages in terms of convenience for patients and cost-effectiveness for the health system. The obstacles to home dialysis included inadequate education, excessive regulation and provider philosophy and practice. |
