Death Within 90 Days: Comparison of Mortality Rate Between Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Patients
|
What are the main findings of the study? |
The within first 90 days mortality rate was higher in hemodialyis (HD) patients than peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, after adjusting for age, race, co-morbidities, and hospitalization. Hemodialysis patients had an estimated 80% higher all-cause mortality than peritoneal patients. |
Were any of the findings unexpected? |
This study confirmed our previous observation that PD patients are generally younger and healthier.
|
What should clinicians and patients take away from this study? |
For younger patients with less comorbidities needing renal replacement therapies, we recommend initiate with peritoneal dialysis. |
What recommendations do you have for future studies as a result of your study? |
Consider PD as an initial renal replacement modality for younger and relatively healthier end stage renal disease patients. |
