Death Within 90 Days: Comparison of Mortality Rate Between Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

NKF Spring 2012 Abstract Presentation:
Sijie Zheng, Lue-Yen Tucker, David Law, Juan Ordonez. Kaiser Oakland Medical Center,
Division of Research, Oakland, California, USA

What are the main findings of the study?

The within first 90 days mortality rate was higher in hemodialyis (HD) patients than peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, after adjusting for age, race, co-morbidities, and hospitalization.

Hemodialysis patients had an estimated 80% higher all-cause mortality than peritoneal patients.

Were any of the findings unexpected?

This study confirmed our previous observation that PD patients are generally younger and healthier.

But we were not sure if there would be any mortality difference if we adjusted for age, race, co-morbidity and hospitalization.

We were a bit surprised that after adjusting all that, HD patients still have 80% higher mortality rate than PD patients.

What should clinicians and patients take away from this study?

For younger patients with less comorbidities needing renal replacement therapies, we recommend initiate with peritoneal dialysis.

What recommendations do you have for future studies as a result of your study?

Consider PD as an initial renal replacement modality for younger and relatively healthier end stage renal disease patients.
