Hemodialysis.com: What are the main findings of the study? |
Some authors have suggested that statins, which reduce CRP levels, may have a positive impact on ESA responsiveness. |
Hemodialysis.com :
Were any of the findings unexpected? |
The regression analysis of effects of simvastatin, dose less than 3μM, on the mRNA expression of hepcidin, EPOR and EPO revealed that there were trends of reverse dose-dependent effects. Our data (Figure 1) showed that the most suppressed effects of simvastatin’s doses are 3μM on hepcidin, 10μM on EPOR and EPO, respectively. Simvastatin downregulated EPO mRNA expression and did not significantly affect the EPO/EPOR ratio. |
Hemodialysis.com What should clinicians and patients take away from your report? |
The doses of simvastatin used in this study (0.1–10 μM) relate closely to blood levels of simvastatin in patients treated with 10 to 80 mg of the drug. The concentrations of simvastatin used are likely higher than those used in clinical settings. |

The changes at the mRNA level do not necessarily reflect changes at the protein level; and the precise molecular mechanisms responsible for changes in hepcidin, erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor mRNA expression are still unclear. |
