Effects of starting hemodialysis with an arteriovenous fistula or central venous catheter compared with peritoneal dialysis: a retrospective cohort study

Hemodialysis.com Author Interview:

Dr. Luis Coentrao

Hemodialysis.com Editor Marie Benz: What are the main findings of the study?

The use of HD catheter at initiation of dialysis increases the risk of death and hospitalizations, compared to the use of AVF or PD catheter.

Hemodialysis.com: Were any of the findings unexpected?

Chronic kidney disease patients who start either PD or HD with an AVF incur similarly  high survival rates at year one of dialysis.

Hemodialysis.com: What should clinicians and patients take away from your report?

Both AVF and PD catheter are better dialysis access choices than HD catheter, for incident chronic kidney disease patients.

Hemodialysis.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?

Prospective study comparing the use of PD catheter vs. HD catheter for unplanned dialysis start.
