10 Things Every Dialysis Patient Should Know

When you develop end stage kidney failure, your kidneys aren't able to function on their own anymore. This usually occurs when you lose about 85-90% of your kidney function. Dialysis can help those with kidney failure live longer, healthier lives, but as a patient, it may feel overwhelming to make decisions surrounding your treatment. It's important to realize that when it comes to your care, you have many rights and choices and the National Kidney Foundation encourages all patients to make informed decisions.

NKF Participates in National Summit on Home Dialysis Policy

New York, NY--While 398,000 patients in the U.S. receive dialysis treatment for kidney failure, only ten percent dialyze at home.   A recent report in the National Kidney Foundation’s American Journal of Kidney Diseases  suggested that as a result of systematic barriers, patients are not alwaysreceiving the option of home dialysis, despite the therapy’s advantages in terms of convenience for patients and cost-effectiveness for the health system.  The obstacles to home dialysis included inadequate education, excessive regulation and provider philosophy and practice.

Caregivers dedicate so much time caring for other people that it can be easy for them to forget to take time for themselves.

(Nov 2011)--Barriers to Home Dialysis

While 382,000 patients in the U.S. receive dialysis treatment for kidney failure, only 5,000 dialyze at home.
A special report in the December issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, the official journal of the National Kidney Foundation, suggests that as a result of systematic barriers, patients are not always receiving the option of home dialysis. This is despite the therapy’s advantages in terms of convenience for patients and cost-effectiveness for the health system.  According to the report, 75% of patients beginning in-center hemodialysis (HD) are unaware of the option to dialyze at home.  Once informed, 40% of patients are interested in this treatment option, and yet less than 10% actually initiate home dialysis.
